New Dog Law in Zurich Effective June 1, 2025

As of June 1, 2025, a revised dog law will come into effect in the Canton of Zurich. All dog owners, regardless of their dog’s breed or size, will be required to complete mandatory training courses.

Key Changes at a Glance:

  • First-time dog owners or those who have not owned a dog in over 10 years must complete a theory course with a final exam.

  • All dogs must undergo a practical training course (6 lessons):

    • Start: from 6 months of age

    • Completion: no later than 12 months after acquiring the dog

  • Training content is defined by the Zurich Cantonal Veterinary Office.

Mandatory Theory Course for First-Time Owners

When Must the Course Be Completed?

  • Earliest: 1 year before getting a dog or moving to the canton.

  • Latest: 2 months after acquiring the dog or relocating to Zurich.

  • The course will only be available after the new law takes effect.

Course Content:

  • Basic knowledge about dogs (needs, behavior, body language)

  • Learning behavior and training methods

  • Legal requirements for dog ownership

Who Is Exempt from the Theory Course?

  • Owners who have kept a dog for at least 6 months within the last 10 years.

  • Those taking over a dog from their spouse or domestic partner, provided the dog has lived with them for at least 6 months.

  • Visually impaired individuals with a certified guide dog.

Mandatory Practical Course for All Dog Owners

When Must the Course Be Completed?

  • Applies to all dogs acquired or brought into Zurich after June 1, 2025.

  • The dog must be at least 6 months old at the start of training.

  • Must be completed within 12 months of acquiring the dog or moving to the canton.

  • Trainers must document progress, and records may be requested by the Veterinary Office.

Course Content:

  • Basic commands (sit, stay, recall, leash manners)

  • Focus & bonding exercises

  • Muzzle training (voluntary acceptance)

  • Safe behavior around people, other dogs, and urban environments

Exemptions from the Practical Course:

  • Dogs over 10 years old at the time of acquisition/relocation.

  • Owners with equivalent prior training (approved by the Veterinary Office).

  • Dogs transferred from a spouse or domestic partner (if cohabiting for at least 6 months).

  • Police, security, and livestock guardian dogs (officially recognized).

Existing Dogs (Registered Before June 1, 2025)

For dogs already registered, previous training requirements no longer apply. However, the Veterinary Office strongly recommends completing ongoing courses and ensuring proper training.

Important: Owners must always maintain control of their dogs to prevent risks to people and other animals.
